Course Abstract

  • Digital controllers find applications in power electronics, industrial drives, automotive, motor control, etc. This course has been designed with both theory and hands-on lab sessions. The lab component focuses on the programming of TI DSP in particular using CCS IDE followed by  digital controller concepts in the theory sessions. An overview of F28379D, SysConfig, SFRA features and examples specific to power applications will be introduced in this course.
  • The lab sessions are organized such that participants can learn the concepts and would be helpful to design a system control. This course has been offered at IIT Madras for 7 years and the course material has been formulated as required.
  • Hence, this course will be helpful for students pursuing a career in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
  • In this course, additional sessions are organized by Texas Instruments and MathWorks to give a brief overview on the architecture and embedded coder.

Equipments Required :

  1. Digital Storage Oscilloscope with at least 2 probes
  2. Texas Instruments TMS320F28379D Development Board

About the Instructor

Dr. N. Lakshminarasamma obtained her Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. She is currently a Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras Chennai, India. Prior to this, she has put in 4 years in academics; she has worked as a software engineer in I2 Technologies India Private Limited and as a systems specialist in GE Healthcare India Limited. Her areas of interest are power electronics, Switched-mode power conversion and renewable energy systems. She has co authored several journal papers in peer reviewed journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and several premier conferences. Prof. Lakshmi is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers (India) and she is a recipient of the SERB Power Fellowship outstanding women researcher award 2022 from the Department of Science and Technology. She is a recipient of the prestigious Bimal K Bose award 2022 from Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications IETE for outstanding contributions in the area of Power electronics. She has co-authored several journal papers in peer-reviewed journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and several premier conferences, and holds 8 patents on power conversion systems related to space and defense applications.

  • An overview of embedded coder features in MATLAB and closed loop control of power converters.
