Description of the Workshop

“Entrepreneurship Essentials: Mindset, Skills, and Knowledge” is a comprehensive 3 day online workshop designed to provide aspiring startups, students, incubation professionals and industry professionals with the foundational tools to foster entrepreneurial success. This course focuses on developing the essential entrepreneurial mindset, equipping participants with practical skills, and imparting the critical knowledge needed to navigate the startup venture. Profile of the Instructor

Dr. Puran Singh

Dr. Puran Singh currently serves as an Associate Professor (Finance and Entrepreneurship) at the School of Management in IIT Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. His research and teaching in entrepreneurship focus on new venture creation dynamics, student entrepreneurship, and incubation ecosystems. Dr Puran is the founding faculty in charge and ex-director of IIT Mandi Catalyst, the first technology business incubator in Himachal Pradesh which he headed during 2016 2023. He has played a pivotal role in enabling the startup ecosystem in Himachal Pradesh by powering the venture journeys of close to 400 startups. He has worked in tandem with government agencies, served on the Governing Board of the Indian STEPS and Incubators’ Association (ISBA), as a member of the CII Northern Region Committee on Startup & Entrepreneurship, and as co-convener on the CII HP Panel on Education & Startups. He also sits on the advisory boards of emerging incubation centers.

Modules of the Workshop

 

Module 1  : Developing Entrepreneurship Mindset

Concepts covered : 

This Module focuses on key principles of effectuation, such as the Bird in Hand (using what you already have), Affordable Loss (focusing on what you can afford to lose rather than potential gains), Pilot in a Plane (taking control and actively shaping outcomes), Lemonade (turning setbacks into opportunities), and Crazy Quilt (forming partnerships to co-create value). These concepts emphasize adaptability, resourcefulness, and a proactive approach to entrepreneurship, enabling participants to navigate uncertainty and develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

Learning Outcomes : 

Participants will grasp the fundamental principles of effectuation and apply them to enhance entrepreneurial thinking in professional contexts. They will learn to leverage available resources, manage risks effectively, and foster creativity and adaptability in problem-solving.

 

Module 2  : Defining Problems Clearly

Concepts covered : 

This Module delves into the process of effectively identifying and articulating business problems. This involves understanding the context in which the problem exists, defining the customer and their needs, examining the consequences of the problem, and evaluating alternatives that customer has.

Learning Outcomes : 

Participants will gain the ability to articulate and dissect complex business problems systematically. By understanding the context, identifying key stakeholders, and evaluating potential consequences, they will refine their problem-solving approach. They will also learn to critically assess alternative solutions and their limitations, ensuring a comprehensive problem definition.

 

Module 3  : Developing Value Proposition

Concepts covered : 

This Module introduces the “Jobs to be Done” framework, which helps participants identify and address customer pain points. The module explores how to ensure product fit with customer needs, and how to craft a clear and compelling solution statement. By focusing on the customer’s challenges, participants will learn to develop a differentiated value proposition that highlights how their offering uniquely meets the target market’s needs.

Learning Outcomes : 

Participants will develop skills in crafting compelling value propositions tailored to address the specific pain points of their target customer segments. They will learn to articulate how their products or services uniquely fulfill customer needs, differentiate from competitors, and effectively communicate these benefits. This module will enable participants to refine their offerings based on customer insights and market demands.
