Description

The CREST is designed to help usher in a transformational approach to the design of the built environment in India. We are responding to the urgent need to train a generation of architects, engineers and other built environment professionals in meeting the triple challenge of climate resilience, energy security and health in the built environment.

This workshop will cover concepts like

  • Designing for climate
    change and extreme events
  • Low carbon development
  • Thermal and visual comfort
  • Low-carbon cooling
  • Life cycle assessment
  • Renewable energy systems
  • Modelling and simulation tools, including the new
    free ZEBRA tool.

Day 1: Neighborhood and cities

Concepts Covered: 

  • Global climate, Climate Change
  • Urban scales and climatic zones
  • UHI and local climatic zones
  • Healthy City Standards + Standards and Guidelines
  • Modeling with EnviMET
  • UHI Forecasting
  • Urban Canopy Models
  • Energy Efficient Neighborhoods and Cities
  • Energy efficiency in Urban Planning and Design
  • Outdoor Thermal comfort
  • Climate resilient and low carbon development strategies
  • Introduction to ZEBRA: Key features(domestic, simple + validation)
  • Estimation of energy and carbon performance of building using an applied example in ZEBRA
    (non-domestic, complex)
  • Thermal response of building envelopes
  • Heat gains and the importance of construction quality
  • Climate data – interpretation and consideration for extreme events

Day 2: Buildings and Materials

  • Thermal comfort and adaptation in built environments
  • Low carbon cooling design: techniques and sizing
  • Environmental performance of glass
  • Daylighting, Shading & Artificial Lighting
  • Acoustics: Basic concepts + building acoustic design
  • Building-integrated renewable energy
  • Taking stock with ZEBRA
  • The impact of IAQ on human health, its measurement and evaluation method
  • Ventilation and its relationship to IAQ
  • Materials selection for construction
  • Nanomaterials, photocatalytic materials and novel coatings, environmental impact of building materials
  • Construction details for energy efficient buildings
  • Low-carbon alternatives
  • Embodied energy assessment, LCA tool demo
Live session:  7hrs lecture. 9am – 1pm, 2pm-5pm

Learning outcome:

By attending this workshop you will gain access to the skills and knowledge needed to fundamentally redesign the built environment in your own projects.

Certification

After attending all the sessions and submitting assessments and submitting the project, we will provide you with a workshop completion certificate from NPTEL.
