Profile of the Instructor

Dr. Joydeep Banerjee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. He is a plant molecular biologist having 16 years of research experience. He works on molecular cloning, gene-expression study in plants and recombinant construct preparation for genetic as well as epigenetic modifications in plants.

Eligibility, Qualification Criteria & Target audience

Qualification Criteria:

B.Tech. in Biotechnology, B.Sc. in Agriculture/ Genetics, M.Tech. in Agricultural Biotechnology or allied discipline

Eligibility Criteria: 

Must have completed B.Tech. or B.Sc. having CGPA >8.0

Target audience:

M.Tech. or M.Sc students of Biotechnology/Molecular Biology/Life Sciences/Agriculture.

Fee for the LAB Workshop

Registration fee : Rs. 1000 

A refund of Rs. 800 will be provided to eligible candidates upon completion of the LAB Workshop.

LAB Workshop Session Details

Since the lab workshop will be residential:

  • Cost/day (room+food) : Rs. 150-200 per day for accommodation and Cost of food will depend on their choices (A lot of food stalls are available throughout the campus).

Objectives of the workshop

  1. Identification of drought tolerant rice genotype through morphological screening under laboratory condition using different concentrations of polyethylene glycol.
  2. Primer designing and cloning of the targeted coding DNA sequences (CDS) from the cDNA of the identified genotype.
  3. Confirmation of the clone by restriction digestion.

Practical component

  1. Demonstration of culture room and screening plants growing in hydroponics
  2. Primer designing of the CDS of the target gene 
  3. mRNA isolation from plants and cDNA preparation
  4. Conducting PCR reaction to amplify the target gene
  5. Cloning in TA vector, blue-white screening, colony PCR and sequencing
  6. Restriction digestion of the recombinant plasmid

Mark Split for the workshop

  • Internal: 20 marks
  • Final exam: 100 marks

Total: 80 (Theory: 40 and Practical: 40)
