Module 1: Process planning for additive manufacturing

Module 2: Arc based technologies for AM

Learning Outcomes:

  • Introduction to metal based AM processes
  • Working principle of Direct energy deposition methods

 

Module 3: Solid state joining technologies like FSW and its variants

Learning Outcomes:

  • Introduce solid state joining technologies approaches for AM and related benefits

Day 2: 

 

Module 4: Texture evaluation in metallic materials during additive manufacturing

Learning Outcomes:

  • Comparative analysis of parts manufactured by conventional and AM route
  • Analysis of grain structure through SEM images

 

Module 5: Mechanical and metallurgical characterization of AM metallic products

Learning Outcomes:

  • In situ monitoring methods for quality assurance.
  • Brief of ASTM standards for mechanical property evaluation of AM parts
  • Introduction to different metallographic techniques to assess printed parts in AM

Profile of the Instructor(s)

Prof. Dheerendra Kumar Dwivedi, PhD, Professor (HAG) in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. He completed his Bachelor of Engineering (mechanical engineering) from Government Engineering College Rewa in 1993, Master of Engineering (welding engineering) from the University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) in 1997 and Doctorate (metallurgical engineering) from MNIT Jaipur in 2003. He has been involved in teaching, research and development, and industrial consultancy for the last 26 years broadly in the area of manufacturing technologies in general and casting, welding, and surfacing modification for improved mechanical properties in particular. Recipient of Binani Gold Medal Award-2001 (IIM). Recipient of W. H. Hobart Memorial Award for your paper “A Functionally Graded Joint between P91 Steel and AISI 316L SS. Recognized amongst the top 1% Global Scientists in Materials Domain by Elsevier-Stanford (2020 and 2021).

He is the recipient of six best research paper awards in National/International conferences. He supervised 17 PhD theses (awarded). He has published in more than 132 research papers in peer reviewed SCI/SCIE indexed International Journal. He has published three books namely “Production and Properties of Cast Al-Si Alloys” with New Age International, New Delhi in 2013 and “Surface Engineering for Enhanced Tribological life of component” with Springer nature in 2018 and “Fundamentals of Metals Joining: Processes, Mechanism, Performance” with Springer nature in 2021.

He has executed more than 20 Research & Development projects and 50 industrial consultancy projects as PI. Filed and published three Indian patents on technologies developed in the area of A GTAW and FSW and out of three one patent has been awarded / granted.

 

Dr. Varun Sharma completed his B.Tech. degree from Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College in 2011 securing first position and got Master’s degree from Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College in 2013 in Production Engineering specialization. He joined IIT Roorkee as a faculty member in 2018 and presently serving as assistant professor in Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India. He has 8 years of experience in research and teaching. He has published 40 research papers in peer reviewed journals and 11 in national and international conferences. His research interest includes Conventional machining processes, Non-conventional machining processes, Machining and process optimization, Ultrasonic assisted machining, Additive manufacturing/ 3D Printing, Mechanical and biomedical applications.

After attending all the sessions and submitting assignments and final exams, we will provide you with a workshop completion certificate from NPTEL.
