Description

This is an AICTE approved Short Term Program

Department: Civil Engineering

Intended audience: College students, Faculty, Others

About the workshop: Our weather and climate are changing at an unprecedented rate. Atmospheric pollution, both gaseous and Aerosols/particles have a significant role to play in understanding the changing weather and climate. Moreover, the surface level air pollution/quality has also seen a huge degradation in recent times and studies highlight their substantial effect on human health and mortality over India. Especially, tiny Aerosol suspended particles in the atmosphere can have a huge impact on all regional weather, climate, and human health.

Here, we aim to provide the participants with an introductory course on the concepts in ambient monitoring, Laboratory Measurement, and Modelling of atmospheric pollutants. Specifically, the course will focus on the following learning objectives:

1) Fundamentals of optical, microphysical, and chemical characterization of atmospheric pollutants.

2) Fundamentals of parameterization and modeling of atmospheric pollutants.

3) Introduction to impact of atmospheric pollutants on urban air quality and climate resilience

Dates of the workshop: 07-03-2022 to 12-03-2022 (6 days)

Profile of the Instructor(s)

Name: Dr. Chandan Sarangi

Profile: Chandan Sarangi is an earth system scientist who completed his Post Doctorate Research from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Richland, WA, USA, and Integrated Ph.D. from IIT Kanpur, India. His under graduation is from NIT Warangal, India. He has extensive experience in Aerosol-cloud-climate interactions; Impact of climate change on Cloud systems and rainfall; Impact of aerosols on Evapotranspiration and land-atmosphere interactions; Effect of dust deposition on snow darkening and Himalayan glaciers; Urban heat island effect and air quality over megacities; Extreme rainfall and coupling with aerosols and urbanization, and Cloud seeding research. He is experienced in large data analysis of remote sensing data and in-situ measurements related to urban air quality and micro- meteorology. He is also a pioneer in high-resolution simulations of aerosol-climate interactions and their impact on hydro-climate over India. In the last 10 years has been part of many cutting-edge research teams and has first-author publications in many reputed and high-impact journals like Nature Communications, Nature Climate Change, Atmospheric Chemistry, Physics, etc.
