Profile of the Instructors

Dr. Sairam Bhat is a Professor of Law at NLSIU and provides training and advisory to various Government and Non-Governmental entities engaged in Start-Up Incubation, Funding and Compliance. Prof. Bhat is a recipient of the Fulbright Fellowship in 2010 at the University of Georgetown, Washington, the Linnaeus-Palme Academic Exchange Fellow at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, in 2013, and received the ‘Young India Environmental Law Fellowship’ in 2003and served as Adjunct Faculty at Golden Gate University, San Francisco during Fall- 2003. His publications include Law Relating to Business Contracts [Sage 2009], Natural Resources Conservation Law [Sage 2010], and Right to Information [EBH 2012].

Prof. (Dr.) Kirk W Junker is a Professor of Law and Vice-Rector for Sustainability at the University of Cologne. He studied philosophy and political science at Pennsylvania State University and received his J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law (1984) and the University of Pittsburgh (1996). He has worked as a lawyer for the Pennsylvania Superior Court and the European Commission and as a litigator for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. He has taught at universities in the United States, Great Britain, Ireland and Germany. Since 2009, he has held the Chair of American Law at the University of Cologne. Since 2019, he has been Director of the Environmental Law Centre. He is also the Head of the Committee of the International Master of Environmental Science Program at the University of Cologne. In 2023 he was elected to become University of Cologne’s first vice rector for sustainability. He has also served as a project advisor to the European Commission and was a founding member of both the European Network of Science Communication Teachers (ENSCOT) and the European Network of Science Communication Researchers (ENSCORE). He has received research funding from the European Commission, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Royal Irish Academy and the British Council, among others. Professor Junker’s research interests include US Law, International Law, Comparative Law, Environmental Law, European Law, Law and the Natural Sciences, and Law and rhetoric, and has published extensively in these areas.

Mr. Vikas Gahlot is a Senior Research Associate a CEERA, NLSIU and a PhD Research Scholar at Symbiosis International University, Pune. He holds B.Sc. and LLB degree from University of Delhi and LLM Degree from National Law University, Jodhpur. He has over 5 years of research experience and has contributed towards various research projects funded by the Government of India, United Nations Development Programme etc. He has published numerous research papers in reputed journals and has contributed chapters in edited books.

Mr. Jaibatruka Mohanta is an Advocate and Research Associate working at CEERA, NLSIU. He is also associated with Lawctopus and assists them in course formulation and delivery of the same. Apart from this, he is engaged with a few startups in structuring a few courses for their initial under-graduate courses.

Mr. Raghava Parthasarathy is a Law practitioner in the Courts and Tribunals at Bengaluru, Karnataka. He graduated from JSS Law College, Mysuru, in 2015, and pursued post graduate studies in Energy laws from University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun in 2016. Presently pursuing his Ph.D., from Gujarat National law University, Gandhinagar, on regulatory framework for upstream Oil and Natural Gas sector. Previously, he worked as a Teaching Associate at the Centre for Environmental Law, Education, Research and Advocacy (CEERA), NLSIU and contributed to key projects including – “Consolidation and Codification of laws for Urban local Bodies in the State of Karnataka”; “Contract Enforcement and Ease of Doing Business in India”, among others. He also has published legal research articles on wide array of topics. He served as Law Clerk for Justice B.V. Nagarathna, then Judge at High Court of Karnataka. As Advocate he has represented the Government and Multi National Companies in several disputes and has argued successfully in reported cases before the High Court of Karnataka. He has served as Guest faculty in Law University and Colleges across Bengaluru.

Dr. Gayathri D Naik is an Assistant Professor and Co-Director of the Commons Cells at NLSIU Bengaluru. She completed her PhD in Environmental Law focusing on Water Law and Policy from SOAS University of London with the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship. She holds LLM in International Legal Studies from South Asian University with University Gold Medal and Top Position for both years of LLM Course. She completed BAL.LLB from MG University with University Top Position. She is a member of IUCN- WCEL, Early Career Group; and Association of Water Lawyers{AIDA}. Her book, Water Justice and Groundwater Subsidies in India: Equitable and Sustainable Access and Regulation is published by Routledge in 2024.

Mr. Sanjay Shenoi P is currently a doctoral Scholar at School of Law (Christ Deemed to be ) University, Bengaluru, with significant year of legal practice at the High Court of Kerala. He completed his BAL.LLB from MG University, LLM in Adminsitrative Law from University of Kerala and MPhil in Constitutional Law and Medical Law from Christ Bengaluru. He researches and works on various issues like human animal conflicts, water accessibilty issues and human rights.

Ms. Nabeela Siddiqui is an Assistant Professor (Sr. Grade), at Vinayaka Mission’s Law School (VMLS), Chennai. She has previously worked with CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Dharamshastra National Law University (DNLU), and the National Green Tribunal, Principal Bench, New Delhi. She was awarded the prestigious President of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold medal, The Innes Prize, The Carmicheal Prize, and The V. Suresham Memorial Award for her master’s from the University of Madras, Chennai. Suresham Memorial Award for her master’s from the University of Madras, Chennai. She has been selected and funded (2025) to undertake the Statelessness Intensive course offered by Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness, University of Melbourne, Australia. She is leading a project as Principal Investigator on “ Building Resilience in Fishing Communities: Assessing the impact of Natural Disasters in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.”

Dr. Mrinalini Banerjee is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at National Law University, Odisha (NLUO). Prior to this role, she accumulated three years of teaching experience at Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar. She holds an undergraduate degree in International Law (Honors) from KIIT School of Law and obtained her Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Transnational Law from King’s College London, where she was awarded the Goodenough Commonwealth Scholarship for the academic year 2016–2017. Dr. Banerjee earned her Ph.D. from Gujarat National Law University, with a specialization in the legal rights of climate refugees.
In addition to her formal education, she has pursued academic courses at SOAS, University of London, and attended the summer school at The Hague Academy of International Law. She has also successfully qualified for the UGC-NET and the All India Bar Examination. Her academic career is distinguished by numerous grants, scholarships, and research projects. Notably, she was selected as a researcher at The Hague Academy of International Law for a year-long tenure (2020–2021), where she represented India as the sole participant among 34 scholars globally.
In 2021, Dr. Banerjee undertook a consultancy project on Environmental Law for the Asian Development Bank and also secured research funding from the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata, and National Law University Odisha (NLUO). Additionally, she contributed as a research associate to a project funded by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India. She has received several prestigious grants and scholarships, including those awarded by the Asian Development Bank (2016), the Global Alliance for Justice Education (GAJE) (2019, 2022), and the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law (2019). Her scholarly contributions are reflected in numerous publications in Scopus- and Web of Science-indexed journals, underscoring her significant impact in the field of law and environmental studies.

Dr. Veena Roshan Jose, LL.M., Ph.D. (Medical Law and Ethics), serves as an Assistant Professor of Law at Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU)- Nagpur, India. She also heads the Centre for Environmental Law at MNLU. Prior to this, she was working as an Assistant Professor at Dharmashastra National Law School (DNLU), Jabalpur, where she headed the Centre for Research in Environmental Law & the Centre for Law, Ethics and Biomedicine. Dr. Veena is an interdisciplinary expert with over 14 years of teaching and research experience. Holding dual Master’s degrees in Human Rights Law and Environmental Law, Dr. Veena takes an interconnected approach across ethical, legal, and social perspectives of various issues. As evidenced by her extensive publications and invited expert lectures, Dr. Veena has mastery over the domains of Environmental Law, Human Rights and Medical Law & Ethics. She has also contributed to the research and academic literature by publishing books on climate change, human rights, and medical law by reputed publishers, and in various journals of repute. Further, Dr. Veena lends her expertise by serving on the Institutional Ethics Committee as a Legal Expert Member, providing ethical-legal guidance and recommendations in clinical research contexts. She is also associated with the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Kerala, in drafting policy documents relating to the Certification of Brain-Stem Death. Dr. Shivender Rahul serves as Assistant Professor & Head In Charge, Department of Humanities at Maharashtra National Law University in Nagpur, where through multifaceted scholarship and teaching, he examines the complex intersections between law, literature, language, climate change, human rights, justice, and ethics. As an accomplished researcher, he has presented his work widely at academic conferences and published seminal papers that have advanced his understanding of the relationships between environmental issues and the law. His advocacy efforts unite diverse stakeholders focused on climate change and environmental sustainability to build consensus around practical, equitable policy solutions. With his combined expertise and experience as a scholar and a teacher, he contributes significantly to public awareness, education, and action on some of the most pressing issues confronting humanity today.
