Short Description

Please note this session includes,

  1. Technical lectures by the faculty.
  2. Live interaction and case studies
  3. A Hand-on activity based on the session

Profile of the Instructor

Dr. Swarnkar earned his B.Tech in Civil Engineering from Uttar Pradesh Technical University (2012), M.Tech in Civil Engineering from IIT Kanpur (2014), and Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from IIT Kanpur (2020), where he researched “Sediment Dynamics of the Ganga River Basin.” After his Ph.D., he served as a National Postdoctoral Fellow at IISc Bangalore. In 2022, he joined IISER Bhopal as an Assistant Professor. His research focuses on human- climate-water interactions in Indian river basins, and he has secured two external projects.
He also organized a highly competitive SERB Karyashala workshop.

Module Details

Day 1

Module 1 :

  • Introduction to Google Earth Engine (GEE) & Basics of Remote Sensing for Hydrological Applications
  • Analyzing Precipitation and Rainfall Patterns Using GEE

Concepts Covered  :

  • Overview of cloud-based geospatial processing.
Applications of GEE in hydrology and water resource management.
  • Key datasets available in GEE for hydrological studies (e.g., satellite imagery, climate data)

Hands-on task:

  • Write a simple GEE script to display water bodies and vegetation using NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index).

Day 2

Module 1 :

  • Surface Water Mapping and Flood Monitoring Using GEE

Concepts Covered:

  • Surface Water Dynamics and Flood Monitoring: Overview of remote sensing techniques for surface water detection (e.g., NDWI, MNDWI).
  • Using satellite data to monitor changes in water bodies over time (seasonal changes, flood detection).
  • Case studies: Applications of GEE in flood monitoring and prediction.

Hands-on task:

  • Map surface water extent and changes during a monsoon season using GEE for a selected region.
