Description about the workshop

The safety lecture series comprises five sessions of 60 minutes each, designed to provide a comprehensive overview of safety practices across academic and industrial environments. The series will begin with general safety measures relevant to everyday life and the workplace, followed by specialized discussions on precautions in scientific laboratories, including chemistry, biochemistry, physics, and environmental science. Further lectures will address safety in engineering laboratories, encompassing aerospace, civil, computer science, mechanical, electrical, metallurgy, and materials science disciplines. By integrating perspectives from diverse fields, the series aims to emphasize that safety is a shared responsibility and that awareness and adherence to basic precautions can prevent the vast majority of accidents, thereby protecting both individuals and the environment.

Profile of the instructor

Professor M. S. Balakrishna joined the Department of Chemistry at IIT Bombay in 1995 and superannuated in mid-2025 after three decades of service. He taught transition metal chemistry, coordination chemistry, interpretative molecular spectroscopy, and main-group organometallic chemistry to undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students. His research interests encompass main-group and transition metal chemistry, organophosphorus ligands, homogeneous catalysis, and the biological applications of copper(I) complexes. He has authored over 250 research papers, contributed five book chapters, edited a book on Copper(I) Complexes of Phosphines (Elsevier), and delivered more than 550 invited lectures. He supervised 34 Ph.D. students, numerous M.Sc. students, and postdoctoral fellows. With four decades of experience, he has worked extensively with pyrophoric reagents and toxic gases, and contributed significantly to laboratory safety practices.

Intended Audience & Eligibility

Intended audience:

The lecture series is open to graduate, postgraduate, and undergraduate students, research scholars, and project staff from diverse science disciplines (chemistry, biochemistry, environmental science, physics, and materials science) as well as engineering streams (aerospace, civil, computer science, electrical, mechanical, metallurgy, and materials engineering). In addition, employees from pharmaceutical companies, chemical industries, polymer industries, and engineering firms are encouraged to participate, including those working in civil, electrical, mechanical, metallurgy, and materials sectors.

Eligibility:

All individuals working or studying in the above-mentioned areas are eligible to participate. A minimum academic qualification of higher secondary or equivalent is required. No specific prior technical knowledge or work experience is mandatory; however, participants are expected to have a general interest in safety practices related to science, engineering, and industrial environments.

Certification Criteria

Attendance and Final quiz are mandatory to obtain a certificate.
