Description of the workshop

Welcome to the Future of Middle School Education
Welcome to our comprehensive workshop on Interactive and Engaging Teaching
Methods—a program designed to transform how you teach and how your
students learn. This workshop is specifically crafted for middle school educators
and is fully aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020
recommendations for innovative, student-centered pedagogies.

Why This Workshop?

The NEP 2020 Vision

The National Education Policy 2020 represents a paradigm shift in Indian
education, moving away from rote memorization toward a more holistic,
competency-based, and experiential learning approach. The policy
emphasizes five key pedagogical approaches: hands-on learning, inquiry-based
questioning, competency-focused education, interdisciplinary studies, and
flexible teaching methods.

The Challenge for Today's Educators
While the vision is clear, many teachers struggle with practical implementation.
How do you make abstract concepts tangible? How do you maintain student
engagement in an age of digital distractions? How do you create meaningful
learning experiences within resource constraints? This workshop answers these
questions with concrete, actionable strategies.

Profile of the Instructor

Mr. Kartic Vaidyanathan brings 30 years of experience in digital technologies and is the founder of LetsPlayToLearn, an IIT Madras-anchored initiative that drives joyful learning through play. An alumnus of IIT Madras, he has pioneered game-based learning courses on NPTEL and trained over 7,000 faculty and students. He has co-authored 'NEP 2020: From Policy to Practice' and is actively engaged in research on AI-driven pedagogy at the Centre for Responsible AI, IIT Madras. His award-winning projects include ChemAmaze (with the PSA, Govt. of India) and innovative STEM games for school and college curricula.

Modules of the workshop

Module 1: Foundations of Interactive Teaching
In this foundational module, you will explore why interactive and engaging
teaching matters and how it aligns with NEP 2020 recommendations. We will
cover:
Understanding Interactive Learning: Interactive learning is not just about fun—it
is grounded in cognitive science. When students actively participate in their
learning through games, puzzles, and hands-on activities, they develop deeper
conceptual understanding, improved retention, and enhanced critical thinking
skills. This module will help you understand the neuroscience behind why
these methods work.
Benefits for Your Students: From improved engagement and motivation to better
academic outcomes and development of 21st-century skills, interactive teaching
creates measurable positive impacts. We will share research findings and real
classroom success stories.

Module 2: Exploring Ready-Made Game Resources
This module introduces you to a comprehensive library of games, puzzles, and
activities that are ready to use in your classroom. These resources are:
* Subject-Specific: Games and activities designed for Mathematics, Science,
English, Social Studies, and other core subjects.
* Grade-Appropriate: Carefully curated for middle school learners, considering
cognitive development and curriculum standards.
* Low-Cost: Most resources use minimal materials or can be played with
common classroom supplies.
* Flexible: Adaptable for different class sizes, time constraints, and learning
objectives.

Module 3: Creating Your Own Games - Simple Tools & Techniques
This is where you become a game designer. You will learn two simple yet
powerful techniques to create your own educational games tailored to your
specific topics and learning objectives

Module 4: Implementation Strategies & Classroom Management
Knowing the games is one thing; implementing them effectively in your
classroom is another. This module covers:
Classroom Setup and Logistics: How to organize your classroom for game-based
activities, manage materials, and ensure smooth transitions.
Group Dynamics and Collaboration: Strategies for forming effective groups,
managing competitive elements, and fostering a collaborative learning
environment.
Assessment and Feedback: How to use games not just for engagement but also
as formative assessment tools. Learn to observe, document, and provide
meaningful feedback during game-based activities.

Module 5: Your Implementation Journey

Planning Your First Implementation: You will identify a specific topic in your
curriculum and plan how to introduce an interactive activity or game to your
students.

Setting Up for Success: We will discuss how to introduce games to your
students, establish ground rules, and create a classroom culture that values both
learning and fun.

Feedback Collection: You will learn how to gather meaningful feedback from your
students about the interactive activities—what worked, what didn't, and how to improve.
Connecting with the Community: You will be introduced to the NPTEL School
Connect community of teachers implementing similar approaches. This network
will be your ongoing support system.
