Description of the Course

This workshop is designed to exposure to fundamental concepts in the diversity, ecology and evolutionary biology of phage. The workshop will be hands-on with computational exercises involving genomics, protein analysis, and phylogenetics using the Galaxy webserver.

This workshop will cover four broad areas:
i) the diversity of phage in nature and phage discovery,
ii) ecological interactions of phage with their hosts and abiotic environment
iii) the evolution of phage and key principles of ecological and evolutionary theory in the context of phage can inform the field of microbial ecology
iv) applications of phage such as phage therapy.

Profile of the Instructor

Dr. Karthik Anantharaman is an Associate Professor and Vilas Faculty Fellow in the Department of Bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where his laboratory studies microbial and viral ecology with applications for human and environmental health, such as in antimicrobial resistance and phage therapy.

Dr. Anantharaman earned his B. Tech in Civil Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka. Afterwards, he obtained his Ph.D from the University of Michigan studying the microbiology of deep sea hydrothermal vents. During his postdoctoral training with Dr. Jillian Banfield at the University of California Berkeley, he studied microbial ecology using terabase-scale metagenomics.

Dr. Anantharaman is the recipient of several awards, including the NSF CAREER, the NIH Outstanding Investigator Award, and the ASM Early Career Award for Environmental Research. His interdisciplinary research program uses a  combination of computational, laboratory and field-based experiments to develop and apply novel approaches to study viral diversity, ecology, and evolution in environments ranging from soil, lakes, oceans, and the human gut.
