Profile of the Instructor

Haroon Lone has been an Assistant Professor at IISER Bhopal since June 2021. He works in the system's domain, and his research focuses on using IoT and data analytics to solve research problems in applied domains such as Healthcare. He has a Ph.D. in CSE from IIIT Delhi. Before joining IISER Bhopal, he spent one year each at the University of Virginia and the University of South Dakota as a Postdoc and Visiting Assistant Professor, respectively.

List of Experiments conducted in the LAB Workshop

Name Description
Demonstrate how to connect sensors to a microcontroller Introduction to the ESP32 development board, Breadboard, Sensors, and programming IDE (e.g., Thonny, Mu Editor). Simple experiments to (i) connect LED and other components on the breadboard with and without a microcontroller. (ii) understand the serial input/output
Demonstrate how to control sensors programmatically (via Micropython) Teach basic programming constructs (if-else, loops, control statements, debugging, etc.). Perform experiments with a microcontroller to (i) control circuit with a relay (ii) Use PIR sensor (iii) Pushbuttons (iv) Ultrasonic sensor
Demonstrate how to store IoT data on a cloud platform Introduction to cloud platforms such as Blynk.io, ThingSpeak, Google. Experiments to log temperature and humidity data on local and cloud storage. This include (i) establishing Wi-Fi connection between ESP32 board and Blynk.io, (ii) Storing data on Blynk platform, (iii) Visualizing stored data via a Blynk mobile application
Demonstrate basic data visualization techniques in Python Introduction to Python Pandas library for statistical features and plotting. Perform basic experiments to (i) get statistical summary features (e.g. mean, median) of the collected data (ii) Identify missing and abnormal values (iii) Clean data by handling missing and abnormal values, (iv) Plot data with different
Demonstrate basic data analysis techniques (e.g., regression, clustering) for real-world applications in Python. Introduction to Scikit-learn Python library for data analysis. Experiments will show how to perform (i) prediction via regression (ii) anomaly detection via clustering. These experiments will be conducted on the offline dataset, which includes temperature, humidity, occupancy, and energy consumption.
