Profile of the Instructor

Dr. Ram Kumar Mishra: Joined IISER Bhopal in November 2011, after  completing his PhD and postdoctoral research from TIFR Mumbai and  NIH Bethesda, respectively. He has been teaching theory (Cell Biology,  Developmental Biology, Cell Signaling, and Animal Physiology) and  laboratory courses (Molecular biology, Protein biochemistry, and  Animal Physiology) to UG and PG students since then.

Dr. Chandan Sahi: Dr. Chandan joined IISER Bhopal in July 2011, after  completing his PhD and postdoctoral research in Plant Molecular  Biology at the University of Delhi and the University of Wisconsin,  Madison, respectively. He has been teaching theory (Recombinant  DNA technology, Genetics, Stress Biology, and Plant Physiology) and  laboratory courses (Molecular biology, Protein biochemistry, and Plant  Physiology) to UG and PG students since then.

Purification of recombinant protein expressed in E. coli using affinity chromatography (Glutathione beads)

Eligibility & Qualification Criteria

Eligibility Criteria: 

Should have knowledge of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

Qualification Criteria:

B.Sc (3rd year) and M.Sc

Fee for the LAB Workshop

Registration fee : Rs. 1000 

A refund of Rs. 800 will be provided to eligible candidates upon completion of the LAB Workshop.

Since the lab workshop will be residential:

Cost/day (room+food) : Rs. 500/day (includes room and bedding  rent, and three meals)

1 Prepare competent cells, transformation, and alkaline lysis-mediated plasmid isolation
2 Digestion of Plasmid DNA with restriction enzyme, setting up a PCR reaction, and analysis of DNA on agarose gel electrophoresis
3 DNA ligation (joining of DNA fragments) and analysis by agarose gel electrophoresis
4 Protein expression and Glutathione affinity purification
5 Bradford reagent-based protein estimation, SDS-PAGE, and Western blotting
6 Exams

Mark Split for the workshop

Internal: 40/100 (Attendance in theory and lab sessions, record book, etc)

Final exam: 60/100 (includes a written quiz, spotting, and performing experiments in the  exam)
