Description

Biomaterial is any biocompatible material that is used for replacing, repairing and augmenting damaged body tissues.  The global biomaterials market is estimated to be US $ 180 B. The market is growing at a tremendous pace in India as well.  Their applications in medical range from Cardiovascular, Orthopaedic, Dental, Plastic Surgery, Wound Healing etc.  Oral cavity is a harsh environment with presence of several hundred microorganisms and enzymes ,variations in pH and temperature and strong mechanical stresses. The materials have to survive these conditions as well as other mechanical, thermal and biological changes. More biomaterials including metals, polymers, ceramics, amalgams, composites etc,  are used in oral cavity than in any other part of the body and also there is continuous research in this discipline. The proposed course will cover fundamental concepts , design problems. Problems pertaining to all these topics will be worked out live. Several of the fundamental concepts are also taught in the  NPTEL , 8 weeks course titled  “Medical biomaterials”
